Japan’s PM Ishiba Advocates for Zero Tariffs in US Trade Talks
Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba has called for the elimination of tariffs in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. In a televised interview, Ishiba underscored the mutual economic benefits of a zero-tariff agreement, citing the recent US-UK trade deal as a model. He argued that high import duties, particularly the 25% tariff on Japanese auto exports, inflate costs for American consumers and harm the US economy.
The Japanese auto industry, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, has suffered under these tariffs. Retaliatory measures have further compounded the issue, with Japan facing a 24% tariff on goods exported to the US. Ishiba’s push for tariff removal aims to alleviate these pressures and foster stronger bilateral trade relations.
